New Delhi: With the Indian government implementing a nationwide 21-day lockdown to counter COVID-19, manufacturing partners of leading tech giant Apple have temporarily shut down production in India until further notice from the government.Apple's manufacturing partners Foxconn and Wistron have temporarily shut down their production facilities to keep the workers safe and comply with the government's decision at their manufacturing plants.
Local industry sources confirmed to IANS on Thursday that local authorities have temporarily suspended development at Foxconn and Wistron facilities as per the lockdown notification and instructions from the government. Apple manufacturer Wistron has manufactured a low-end iPhone SE (now discontinued) and is now manufacturing iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 at its facility in Bengaluru.
The highest-selling iPhone XR is now being manufactured at the Sriperumbudur, Chennai facilities of Apple supplier Foxconn. For several other companies apart from Apple, including Xiaomi,both Foxconn and Wistron are the main manufacturing partners too. Samsung, owing to the lockout, has already shut down its Noida factory and offices.
"At Samsung, our highest priority is employee health and safety. As a step to protect our workers and their families against Covid-19 and in compliance with government guidelines, we have decided
to suspend our manufacturing operations at the moment and have asked workers at our sales, marketing and R&D offices across India to operate from home," said Partha Ghosh, Head of Corporate C
Several other smartphone manufacturers, including the likes of Xiaomi, LG, Motorola, Vivo, Oppo and Realme, are also affected by the nationwide lockdown and have suspended production.
