Twitter, online microblogging service for the dissemination of short messages via personal computer or mobile phone between groups of recipients. Twitter combines features of social networking websites, such as Myspace and Facebook, with instant messaging technology for building networks of users that can connect through short messages or "tweets" during the day. A user types a tweet from a cell phone keyboard or device and sends it to the Twitter server, which relays it to a list of other users (known as followers) who have signed up.
Twitter was built using Ruby on Rails,a specialized Ruby computer programming language Web-application platform.
Its architecture allows for flexible adaptation and online integration with other services. The service was founded by Evan Williams and Biz Stone in 2006, both
of whom worked at Google before leaving to start the Odeo podcasting company.Williams, who had previously developed the influential Blogger Web authoring method, started experimenting with one of Odeo's side projects — a short message service (SMS) that was then renamed Twttr. Williams, seeing a potential for the drug, bought Odeo and started Obvious Corp. to grow it further.
At its inception Twitter was mainly afree SMS with an aspect of social networking. As such, the consistent revenue stream that one could expect on sites that generated revenue from banner ads or membership fees was missing. With the number of unique visitors that by some 1.300 trillion in 2009, it became clear that Twitter was more than a curiosity about a niche. Nonetheless, in a year that saw Facebook's social networking juggernaut make a profit only for the first time, it was not clear if Twitter could gain financial independence from its venture capital investors. Twitter published in April 2010: "Promoted Tweets .
The social networking origins of Twitter were evident in April 2009, when actor Ashton Kutcher emerged as the victor in a race with CNN to become the first Twitterer to collect more than one million followers. Although celebrity "e-watching" remained a significant draw for the site, companies soon started to submittweets about promotions and activities, and political campaigns discovered Twitter's importance as a means of communication. Barack Obama defeated his rival, John McCain, in the social media arena in the 2008 U.S. presidential race, amassing almost four times as many Myspace friends and more than twenty times as many Twitter followers.
